The Delta Gold's value proposition is the first checked bag free for the cardholder and a meaningful number of companions on the same reservation. That benefit alone saves real money on a family vacation that involves checked luggage. The first-year fee waiver means year one is essentially free benefits; subsequent years require roughly two checked-bag round trips to break even.

Earn rates concentrate on Delta, restaurants, and U.S. supermarkets, with the baseline rate elsewhere. The supermarket category is unusual for an airline card and meaningfully extends earning beyond travel-only spend. Pick Gold over Blue if you check bags on Delta at least twice a year; pick Platinum over Gold if you'd actually use the Companion Certificate and the higher status-qualifying spend.
