The Business Gold's selling point is the algorithm: each month, Amex automatically applies the top-tier multiplier to whichever two of six eligible categories your business spent the most in — U.S. media, transit, U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, U.S. computer hardware and software, and electronic goods. You don't pick, you don't track, the math runs itself. For businesses whose spend pattern shifts month to month, that's genuinely useful.
Where it stops making sense is the annual fee assumes a real chunk of your card spend lands inside those six categories. If your business is mostly contractor payments, raw materials, or wholesale inventory — none of which fire the multiplier — you'd be earning the baseline rate on the bulk of your card volume and paying the fee for the privilege. Pull last year's books and run a category-by-category estimate before you apply; the math has to clear the fee plus the credits you'd actually use.
